  1. Howdy. I wanted to comment on the legacy server issue. Myself, I have played WoW off and on for several years, since around the time of the Burning Crusade and have had a paid account the whole time. I never got the chance to play on Nostralius as I only heard about it from the news of it being forced to close. I would have tried it out if given the chance.

With regards to whether or not there is interest, it is difficult to judge from the Nostralius numbers. There may be some whom played because it was free, but there are also others who played because of the game itself. I know some people that stopped playing because of the direction the game was being taken. The problem with trying to judge off a private server is the nature of private servers. They are kept low key, not widely advertised, and because of legal issues, that alone can dissuade people who otherwise might be interested.

As for my own interest, I'd like to be able to go back and experience the original game. I never was able to get much into end game content back then. Sure, we can still access some of that now, but the challenge isn't there when you can walk in with a small group of max level characters and annihilate everything. Some content like 40 Naxx and much of the sunken temple was removed entirely. Even then, with the way the game has been changed, doing the Cataclysm dungeons for the old world has very little challenge. I think the concept of Timewalking is certainly a step in the right direction at least.

Some benefits that I could see of having some form of legacy servers is that it would increase the amount of challenging content. It would also allow Blizzard to bring back certain limited time item rewards that were available only through certain events, or were removed (such as the Protodrake for the Wrath Naxx achievements) without diminishing the difficulty that was originally required to get these rewards.

As for feasibility, it would be harder to say. Everquest had managed to do a form of legacy servers, but that game also didn't generally overhaul much of its core systems. Instead they generally built new systems on top of the old. So I could see where WoW might have a harder time with that. As far as how it interacts with Battle.Net, this wouldn't be much of a problem. The launcher is essentially a patcher, and most of the client is only the art assets. The issues would be more on the database side if they changed drastically how this is stored, as well as in the server code where all the class spells, abilities, and other systems are. This would also depend on if Blizzard ever saved any of that older code or not.

Anyway, that's my views and opinions on the matter. I hope this helps some.

    1. Thank you so much for the reply! It is great to hear your opinion on this matter, and it really helped to stimulate more conversation on the matter this week on the show.

This whole issue is quite the polarizing topic in the community, but it is great to receive such sincere and well thought out opinions about this issue.

We hope that you continue to enjoy the show, and again thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Take care!
